Schachten - The meadows in the middle of the forest have been given up in the 50's. The Schachten shall be kept in future as tree-free areas as witnesses of a cultural era.
…the oldest connections between "Donau" and "Moldau". Where at one time spices and silk have been transported you will hike today - without luggage - from Deggendorf to Bayerisch Eisenstein. Or experience on 99 km glass in its whole variety on the historic "Gläserner Steig".

On the track of the glass blowers a new trail (99 km) leads you through one of the most beautiful parts of the Bavarian Forest. It connects the "Lamer Winkel" with the "Eisensteiner Hochtal" and leads through the wildlife park which surrounds the "Zwieseler Winkel" directly into the Nationalpark Bayerischer Wald, before it ends in Grafenau.

Either at the festive "Arberkirchweih" or at midsummer celebrations, at the "Ludwigshöhfest" or at concerts in the centre of the village, or during hikes in the night with torches, or sociably evenings in the glassworks - to have a good mind to celebrate is very independent!
No happening without snow?
The "Große Arber" with an altitude of 1.456 m is not only the highest peek of the Bavarian Forest, but with the new cable railway, 8 km of machine trimmed ski runs and four cross country skiing centres also the absolute winter star. Not for nothing the world cup races in slalom and giant slalom are being held at the "Große Arber".
And where you find so much skiing fun, also Après-Ski-Parties have to take place. Three cottages and the "Sonnenfelsen" with its "Herzblatt Partys" are well prepared for the onrush of thirsty winter athletes to feel the magic of the cosy cottages.
The "Skibus" (December 22, till March 31,) takes you from Bayerisch Eisenstein directly to the Arber skiing area and back. Just mount the bus and start to find the absolute skiing action.
The "ride and snow Bus" takes you (depending on how much snow is on the ground) from December 21, until the beginning of April to the cross country skiing paths and to the skiing area at the "Großer Arber" at a reasonable price. The schedules as well as the tickets are available here!
